Hiking: explore the area on foot
There are many walking routes in the campsite’s vicinity. Spring and autumn are the most suitable times of the year for walking or cycling.
There are five marked walking routes starting at the campsite. In the Serra da Estrela you will find a number of well-marked routes. Exploring the mountains under guidance is also possible as we collaborate with an experienced guide. Furthermore, there are various marked routes in the slate stone village Piodão (Serra do Açor). In the whole area work is being undertaken to ensure the routes are well-marked.
On our website you can find a couple of links to websites with further information. In the Lonely Planet of Portugal you’ll find some suggestions. We have some books available with hikingtrails. Also take a look on Wikiloc.
The nearby village Vale de Maceira hosts a Santuario da Nossa Senhora das Preces, a
beautiful old monastery with historic chapels of the Way of the Cross. There are also splendid old trees in the botanical garden. In 1371, Our Lady appeared to a few shepherd’s children on the top of the Monte do Colcurinho. A chapel named ‘Capela da Nossa Senhora das Necessidade’*(chapel of our Lady of Need) was built in remembrance. The mountain summit provides beautiful views on, amongst others, Ponte das Três Entradas. The Portuguese like to visit this mountain and use the eating area for barbecues.
For experienced cyclists there are challenging tours, for example to Monte de Colcurinho (1244 meter) or the Torre (1993 meter). But there are also options for less experienced cyclists. You can take one of cycling routes starting from our campsite. We rent out mountain bikes for 7.50 euro per day.
We collaborate with Rock and River. Under their enthusiastic guidance you can enjoy outdoor activities such as abseiling and kayaking on the Mondego. Outdoor company Transserano also organises kayaking tours and other activities such as paintball nights and trips to iconic places in the region. Both organisations have English speaking guides.
We rent out canoes, giving you the opportunity to explore the small rivers near the campsite.
Skiing in the winter
This Video shows the Serra da Estrela in wintertime.
Thinking of Portugal, snow may not spring to mind, but you can ski here on the Torre, which is the highest mountain of the Serra da Estrela. There are six ski lifts and a number of ski tracks. And in case there is no snow, a small artificial snow track. Click on the link to see if the ski tracks are open: http://www.skiserradaestrela.com
We collaborate with partners in the area that organise horse riding tours.
For those who like an aerial view, it is possible to try paragliding.
